The Old Rectory Luxury Suites
There are 18 Luxury Suites right on the doorstep of Plettenberg Bay’s main beach. Each room is tastefully decorated and has either a balcony or garden access with climate control, underfloor heating, gowns and slippers, soaps and sanitary products, DSTV, espresso machine and mini bar.
The bathrooms are open plan which is not for everyone’s taste so I would recommend this getaway for couples sharing. I absolutely LOVED the shower head which was so big it felt like I was under a waterfall! What’s more is that some of the rooms are inter-leading which is actually quite good for families with kids.
Room service is available 24 hours a day and the staff are extremely professional and attentive. Yes, expect your gown and slippers to be laid out for you when you retire to your room after dinner. During my visit, one of the guests fell ill with a fever and the staff were able to make a hot drink of water, lemon and ginger for the guest at 4am, taking it right to his room. Now that’s great service!
Breakfast
Each day, enjoy a full continental breakfast complete with Mimosas and followed by a hot breakfast of your choice. I can definitely recommend the granola (it is hand made by the chef) as well as the blueberry and bacon french toast! It is absolutely the best way to get your day off to a good start. MCC is provided by the local winery, Kay and Monty Vineyards.
The Beach!
Make arrangements with reception to set up a place for you on the beach which is just a two minute walk away. The hotel will ensure beach chairs, umbrellas and towels are available at your leisure and will pack away for your afterwards. The sun rises over the ocean so I would recommend that you enjoy a leisurely stroll along the beach, early morning before breakfast.
It’s also really great to spend the entire day on the beach and soak up the sun. The water is quite warm actually, being the Indian ocean, and I hardly experienced any wind – a God send when you are a ‘Capetonian’.

Pool & Spa facilities
If you haven’t had enough sun at the beach by this time, well then cocktails by the pool just might be the perfect end to your day.
And if you are still not utterly relaxed, well then surely a massage at the Spa will relax you. The ladies will be pleased to know that there is a nail technician on site too, so manicures and pedicures are readily available.
Winefarms
Just a 20 minute drive from The Old Rectory, are a vast array of wine farms like Kay and Monty Vineyards, Lodestone Wines, Newstead and Bramon. You can read more about these wine farms by clicking on this link.

The Old Rectory Bar & Dinner
End off your day with pre-drinks at the bar – the local wine of course – followed by a three course luxury menu at the restaurant. Meals are small and tasty and you can expect the chef to visit your table! Starters are around R74, mains around R180 and dessert around R80. I was absolutely in love with the decor. Built in 1777, this is a national heritage site and was indeed, a rectory, i.e. where the local pastor/priest lived.
Visiting the ruins
Still very much a national heritage site and in ruins, lies this beauty just opposite the road. Apparently a popular choice for weddings and you can see why. Word has it that once The Old Rectory gets the go-ahead from the National Heritage Association, they will be restoring these ruins for better use in the future.
In Closing
I had a great time at the Old Rectory, just a 5 hour drive from Cape Town. Definitely the best time for locals to visit is before the busy season, so take full advantage of this special offer and plan your trip before the end of November 2018.
