What a treat at wine farm 126 of 800, Kunjani Wines in Stellenbosch, South Africa. This winery is totally modern and boasts not only wine but a restaurant and accommodation too.
Kunjani means “Hi, how are you?” and this is absolutely the sentiment you get when you visit this winery. You feel absolutely welcome.
The winery was founded by Paul Barth & Pia Watermeyer and the architecture, by Haldane Martin, was inspired by the patterns painted on West African mud huts.
Kunjani Wines is open 7 days a week which is relatively unheard of as most wineries are closed on Mondays. This makes it a super special destination for families, cyclists and special occassions for breakfast and lunch.
The restaurant allows for panoramic views of the beautiful vineyards of Stellenbosch. If you re a cyclist, this is a popular stop for breakfast after a mountain bike run in Stellenbosch.
There are stairs at the entrance but what I thought was really good was that there was also a lift for wheelchair access.
I would not recommend this winery for families with small children. There is not really space for them to play. This winery is best for groups of 4-8 people.
Kunjani Wines Wine Tasting
Wine tasting is R60 for 6 wines which includes a Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Rose (Merlot & Shiraz), Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon & Shiraz. The wine labels reflect that of the architecture of the building (mud hut pattern) all except the Rose which has a totally different look. The Rose is dedicated to Pia’s late son who was renowned for finding chickens.
Definitely the best find for me was the 2015 Shiraz of which I bought two cases (and I am now part of the wine club). It has been awarded as one of the top 12 Shiraz in the country!
Kunjani Wines Restaurant
The restaurant offers a great range of breakfasts and lunch options ranging from Eggs Benedict to Lamb Shank. The prices are a bit on the pricey side but it is definitely worth the quality with thanks to Chef Lamek Mnisi! Expect to pay around R100 for breakfast and mains for around R200. I thought the Pizza offers great value at around R150 a pizza.
Directly below the restaurant and tasting room, is a fabulous 2-bedroom apartment called Stolen Chicken. It’s a self-catering unit which is perfect for two couples to share, each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom and there is a fully equipped kitchen and even smart TV.
There are three other villas on the estate which are also open to bookings. You can visit the villas page here: https://kunjaniwines.co.za/villas/
