Journey’s End Vineyards and Interpunkt have introduced a pioneering range of wines packaged in sustainable paperboard bottles – a first in South Africa. I must say, this is quite cool. Much better than a box and great for picnics but not so much for the dinner table. This innovative partnership combines award-winning wines with eco-friendly packaging, aiming to make wine more accessible, engaging, and sustainable for all.
Introducing the Sustainable Paperboard Wine Bottles
Launching exclusively on May 31, 2023, in select Checkers, Checkers Hyper supermarkets, and Checkers LiquorShop stores, the W.O. Western Cape Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz produced by Journey’s End are presented in paperboard bottles. These bottles, made from 100% recyclable paperboard outers, are significantly lighter than traditional glass alternatives, resulting in a lower carbon footprint and reduced environmental impact.
Making Wine Accessible and Inclusive
Interpunkt, founded by Andrew Ingham, aims to make wine more approachable and inclusive, particularly for new and occasional wine drinkers. To achieve this, they have removed the specialized and potentially intimidating language often found on wine labels. The South African Sauvignon Blanc and Shiraz varietals, both IPW certified, are described simply as “fresh and zesty” and “juicy and easy drinking” respectively, providing clear and relatable descriptors.
Putting Consumers First with Sustainable and Delicious Wines
Andrew Ingham, an experienced international wine buyer, believes in prioritizing consumers and offering them delicious, sustainable wines without unnecessary complexity. Ingham states, “By introducing wine drinkers to a new accessible brand in forward-thinking packaging, which also prioritizes trusted, ethically and sustainably sourced grapes, I believe we can show people that good wine is for everyone.”
Choosing a Dynamic and Sustainable Partner
Finding like-minded partners was crucial for Ingham and the Interpunkt brand. Journey’s End Vineyards, renowned for its excellent wines, was selected not only for its winemakers’ expertise but also for its sustainable and ethical accreditations. Journey’s End has been recognized as the Ethical Company of the Year in 2020 and 2021 and is a WWF Conservation Champion. The vineyard’s commitment to sustainability, including solar power conversion, aligns perfectly with the ethos of the collaboration.
A Shared Vision for Sustainable Wine Production
Rollo Gabb, Managing Director of Journey’s End, emphasizes that sustainable wine production is at the core of their values. After two years of searching for a bottler willing to embrace the challenge of paperboard bottles, Journey’s End is excited to have found the right partner in South Africa. Gabb says, “We are hugely excited to be working with Andrew producing wines in a paperboard bottle for the first time in South Africa. We are all raring to go.”
