I spent Heritage Day weekend in Montagu, a 2-hour’s drive from Cape Town and stayed at the Monte Vista Boutique Hotel. This “Afro-chic” gem offers thirteen en-suite bedrooms, each with their own private veranda. The best part? They are centrally located in Church street which means you are in the heart of it all!
Checking in was easy, Pauline welcomed me and after a quick covid protocol, she showed me around the property and to my room.

The room was an executive standard suite complete with a shower, a bar fridge, air conditioner, gowns, and even a few extra treats like Darling toffee and wine. Despite the hotel being fully booked this weekend, it was surprisingly serene with little to no noise whatsoever. For a full hotel, it certainly was relaxing and I was made to feel like we were the only ones there!

Breakfast at Monte Vista Boutique Hotel
Breakfast is served to guests from 7-10 am. A fruit starter is followed by a hot meal. On the first morning, I enjoyed scrambled eggs on ciabatta with biltong and on day two it was a hot English Breakfast buffet. Bottomless coffee, quality teas and orange juice made the breakfast complete.

Things to do in Montagu:
Relax by the pool at Monte Vista Boutique Hotel
If it is a warm day, then I would definitely suggest a relaxing time around the pool at Monte Vista Boutique Hotel (guests only). There is an honesty bar where you can help yourself to drinks, ice and snacks which came in very handy. I was certainly lucky to relax at the pool at the right time because we were the only ones there and took full advantage of lounging on the loungers. I even went for a dip and did a few laps in the pool. The day was obviously not complete without some bubbly!

The Ghost & Historic Town Bike Tour
The Ghost & Historic Town Bike Tour by Flying Feet is a treat! All of this is done on a bicycle through the town. Tours start at 18h00 – 19h30 and 19h15 – 20h45 on Tuesdays – Saturdays (minimum 4 people on the tour). Dinner in Montagu
If you bump into one of the locals, they will recommend that you try Mimosa Lodge and 22 on Church for dinner. On the first night, I went to Mimosa Lodge and enjoyed a fabulous Eland steak with potato wedges and fresh veggies. I popped into 22 on Church on the second night for their meal of the day which was trout served on a bed of rice (Asian style)! Both these restaurants can become quite pricey so therefore be sure to check out the menu beforehand. I can say that the cost is well worth it though and booking is a must!

Wine Tasting in Montagu
You absolutely need to make this a stop when in Montagu. it is the new Blu Vines venue which is also home to Mimosa Wines. The decor just exudes opulence which reminds me of Dubai. Wine tasting at Mimosa is R50 per person to taste 4 wines. This wine tasting venue is just a 2-minute drive from Monte Vista Boutique hotel.

Saturday Market:
One can walk to the village market from the hotel. Shop from a range of stalls offering food, fashion, accessories, jewellry, beauty products and more!
