Happy Chardonnay Day and just because you deserve it, I have TWO cases of De Wetshof Wine to give to TWO lucky winners!
De Wetshof Wines are often referred to as the “House of Chardonnay” because they offer so many different types of Chardonnay – five in fact! This Robertson Wine Valley winery is about a 2-hour drive up the scenic route from Cape Town and the area offers wonderful accommodation too. Definitely a getaway idea to keep in mind for post-lockdown.
De Wetshof Wines are famous for 5 different types of fine Chardonnay that cater to every palate. Ranging from an unwooded Chardonnay at R102 a bottle to their very exclusive and premium single site Chardonnay at R552 a bottle.
Some interesting facts about Chardonnay:
- Chardonnay is from a place called Burgandy in France.
- The variety itself boasts fruity flavors that range from tropical (melon, banana, guava, and pineapple) to stone fruits (nectarine, peach, and apricot), apples, and citrus.
- It is often referred to as the “winemakers wine” because the use of oak in the maturation of the wine can have quite a big impact on the taste of the wine.
- Chardonnay is the most planted white grape in the world. In fact, not too long ago, the trend was to over-oak Chardonnay. This lead to people saying “ABC – anything but Chardonnay” but today, advancements in skill has lead to a better trend of “ABC – Absolutely Brilliant Chardonnay”.
- Legend has it that this grape was planted because a woman didn’t like the red wine stains on her husband’s beard.
Here are the different Chardonnay’s that De Wetshof offer:
Heavy clay soils rich in limestone allow this Chardonnay to emit optimum varietal expression in a cloak of rich complexity. An un-wooded wine, Limestone Hill has notes of grapefruit and nuts, with the complexity balanced by a nuanced elegance ending with a delicate ripeness.
Soils rich in limestone and broken mountain rock on De Wetshof’s site-specific vineyards allow this wine to emit optimum varietal expression. An unwooded wine, Bon Vallon has a brisk and clean freshness leading into a wide spectrum of classic flavours including citrus, wild flowers and grilled nuts, with a nuanced minerality on the aftertaste.
Rocky, gravelly mountain soils rich in limestone with a significant amount of clay to assist in the water-retention capacity helps the vines to develop fruit with strong citrus flavors and and a characteristic nuttiness on the mid-palate and finish.
This is a multi-dimensional wine distinguished by a remarkable complexity of flavours derived from the fine quality of grapes and good wood. The vineyards were established in 1986 and have produced Chardonnay grapes of exceptional quality year after year due to their perfect location.
Matured in French oak barrels for one year, this elegant wine exudes fine aromas of lime and vanilla rounded off with a nutty, creamy texture on the palate.
Gravel soils originating from mountain rock rich in limestone and clay with a high pH allow this single vineyard Chardonnay to portray a spectrum of flavours framed in elegance and complexity, typical features of a classic Chardonnay. Citrus and pear-drop notes are complemented by an intriguing nuttiness, with elegant citrus on the finish.
