Food & Wine Pairing heaven, Prawns & Pinot Grigio Rosé

Posted on Feb 20, 2020 Leave a Comment on Food & Wine Pairing heaven, Prawns & Pinot Grigio Rosé
Rose wine and prawns food pairing

First of all, as a South African, you may ask… what is a Pinot Grigio Rosé? Strictly speaking, you would normally drink this as a white wine but in some cases, the juice of the grapes is left of the bluish grape skin which in turn, creates a beautiful rose-gold coloured wine. Now this style of wine is absolutely fabulous for a food and wine pairing with prawns!

My dad has recently bought a gas braai. Not only does it save trees because it runs on gas and not wood, but it comes in pretty handy when the electricity goes off – a reality here in South Africa. We found ourselves sitting around the gas braai and frying up some delicious prawns with an array of spices, sauces, and delicious Rosé wine!

Food & Wine Pairing Recipes

I recently tried the new 2018 vintage of Van Loveren Perlé de Jean Pinot Grigio rosé as a food and wine pairing option with prawns and was blown away! So I’m sharing some of these amazing recipes with you which you can download right here…

Van Loveren Pinot Grigio Rose

This salmon-pink wine launched last year by Van Loveren Family Vineyards to great acclaim for its vivacious taste and elegant design. The wine quickly became the sunshine beverage to enjoy, especially when seafood’s on the menu. Perlé de Jean is just perfect with prawns, whether they’re flame-grilled (or gas grilled) on a stick, marinated, spiced, curried, or served in pasta or smothered in paprika aioli.

Now, the 2019 vintage of Perlé de Jean extends the fun. Its charm captivates with an aroma of ripe, fresh red berries, citrus zest and melon. Every sip is a bracing, summer kiss delivered on a featherlight bed of tiny, pearl bubbles.

The source of the wine’s title is more than just a story. Perlé de Jean gets its name from the late and effervescent matriarch to the Retiefs of Van Loveren. The label design is a loving tribute to her and the magnificent garden she and husband Hennie established with the estate in 1939.

Many of the trees they planted together over the years commemorate special occasions and historic figures, including intimate family events such as the births of 11 grandchildren. Now a lush paradise, the garden at the home of Van Loveren in the Robertson Wine Valley is open to visitors and remains a popular, year-round destination to this day.

Perlé de Jean reflects this vibrancy inside and out. The wine is made from Pinot Grigio, a red wine grape that Van Loveren harvests at night to ensure its plump, fresh fruitiness is retained from vineyard to bottling. As far as ascertained, the wine was South Africa’s first perlé-styled Pinot Grigio rosé when it was released.

Now it’s firmly established as a drink of choice wherever the sun shines. Apart from prawns and seafood, Perlé de Jean is also a great fit when served with chicken, summer salads, cold cuts and vegetarian dishes. Serve it chilled and enjoy responsibly.

Perlé de Jean Pinot Grigio is available at Checkers, Makro, Food Lover’s Market and selected Spar and Tops@Spar stores. It sells for around R69.99.

It’s a bling bottle of Italian Sparkling Wine 🙌💞 and it’s R500 a bottle 😜

It’s called Vino dell’Amore Petalo Pink Manzoni Moscato Rosé and
is an exclusive and very rare sweet sparkling rosé wine.

This rare grape variety was created by crossing Raboso Piave and Muscat of Hamburg. It has the fresh and fragrant character of the original grapes, a low alcohol content and a distinctive, pleasantly sweet taste. The colour is delicately pink, brilliant, with fine and lasting perlage.

The bouquet is intense and refined, characterised by aromas of roses, raspberry, ripe citrus fruits, and final notes of sage. It is sweet and elegant, harmonic and balanced, with a long aromatic persistence, with acidity and tannins balancing the sugar content.

Pair this sweet sparkling with Provolone Dolce cheese, fruit (apple and pear) and shortbread biscuits. @bottega_africa

Neil Ellis Wines is my 141st South African wine fa Neil Ellis Wines is my 141st South African wine farm visit. They have a “newish” wine tasting centre in Stellenbosch which is absolutely lovely with incredible views.

They didn’t start off like that though, owner Neil Ellis, started winemaking in 1984 and would source grapes from all over Stellenbosch to make his wine in a rented cellar space. Today, this wine has made a brand for itself and is synonymous with top-quality reds! Especially Cabernet Sauvignon.
