De Wetshof Wines are often referred to as the “House of Chardonnay” because they offer so many different types of Chardonnay – five in fact! This Robertson Wine Valley winery is about a 2-hour drive up the scenic route from Cape Town and the area offers wonderful accommodation too. Definitely a getaway idea to keep in mind for post-lockdown.
De Wetshof Wines are famous for 5 different types of fine Chardonnay that cater to every palate. Ranging from an unwooded Chardonnay at R102 a bottle to their very exclusive and premium single site Chardonnay at R552 a bottle.
Here are the different Chardonnay’s that De Wetshof offer:
Heavy clay soils rich in limestone allow this Chardonnay to emit optimum varietal expression in a cloak of rich complexity. An un-wooded wine, Limestone Hill has notes of grapefruit and nuts, with the complexity balanced by a nuanced elegance ending with a delicate ripeness.
Soils rich in limestone and broken mountain rock on De Wetshof’s site-specific vineyards allow this wine to emit optimum varietal expression. An unwooded wine, Bon Vallon has a brisk and clean freshness leading into a wide spectrum of classic flavours including citrus, wild flowers and grilled nuts, with a nuanced minerality on the aftertaste.
De Wetshof Finesse Chardonnay 2019 R147.00 (my favourite!)
The 2019 vintage of this wine marks the 30th anniversary of Finesse, which De Wetshof owner Danie de Wet introduced into the market in 1989 aimed at consumers preferring a lightly-wooded Chardonnay. In 1989 the South African Chardonnay industry was barely 10 years old, with most producers using copious wooding in their wines and not appealing to all consumers. With the Finesse, De Wetshof aimed for a lighter-wooded style of wine accentuating the diversity and freshness of the Chardonnay grape.
Rocky, gravelly mountain soils rich in limestone with a significant amount of clay to assist in the water-retention capacity helps the vines to develop fruit with strong citrus flavors and a characteristic nuttiness on the mid-palate and finish.
The wine is mostly fermented in 2nd and 3rd fill barrels, specially selected to express the fruit nuances in the wine and subdue the stern effect of oak. After fermentation the wine ages in the barrels for 10 months. Stirring of the lees is done every week to add texture and mouth-feel.
This is a multi-dimensional wine distinguished by a remarkable complexity of flavours derived from the fine quality of grapes and good wood. The vineyards were established in 1986 and have produced Chardonnay grapes of exceptional quality year after year due to their perfect location.
Matured in French oak barrels for one year, this elegant wine exudes fine aromas of lime and vanilla rounded off with a nutty, creamy texture on the palate.
Gravel soils originating from mountain rock rich in limestone and clay with a high pH allow this single vineyard Chardonnay to portray a spectrum of flavours framed in elegance and complexity, typical features of a classic Chardonnay. Citrus and pear-drop notes are complemented by an intriguing nuttiness, with elegant citrus on the finish.
