Belthazar, the celebrated ‘Theatre of Fine Food and Wine’ at the V&A Waterfront, is BACK! On 1st November Belthazar will be reopening its doors, still on the Victoria Wharf in the vibrant heart of the Waterfront, but just a few doors down, adjacent to sister restaurant Gibson’s on the seafront.
Belthazar originally opened its doors at the V&A Waterfront in 2003, offering guests a meat and seafood extravaganza, the largest wine-by-the-glass bar in the world and panoramic views of the Waterfront and Table Mountain. Over time, Belthazar became one of Cape Town’s leading restaurants, collecting many prestigious awards along the way, including best steakhouse in South Africa, best seafood restaurant in Cape Town, best Waterfront restaurant, TripAdvisor Awards of Excellence, Wine Spectator Awards of Excellence for its wine list, and more. Sadly, like so many restaurants in South Africa, it closed its doors in 2020 due to COVID-19.
Belthazar is back with a twist. “We want Belthazar to be the locals’ first choice when considering a grill” says co-owner Ian Halfon. “We will also be offering exclusive deals to loyalty card holders throughout the year as well as amazing value specials for the whole family in winter. This will also include our large selection of quality bottled own label house wines.”
“You can expect our same phenomenal steaks and seafood, our exceptional selection of premium wines served in Riedel glassware, our iconic wine bar with the biggest nitrogen-infused tap unit in the world, the very best and freshest ingredients with a focus on local, the same rich ambience and captivating vibe, and slick professional service – all set in an idyllic location, with our spectacular all-weather dining enclosure on the terrace offering the same glorious views.”
“Good news is that Belthazar will be launching its value al fresco lunch menu 7 days a week. Not only will there be affordable value meals such as charcuterie, cheese boards, burgers, and steak and seafood offerings but also wine tastings so that nobody is left out of tasting our array of award-winning wines. For those that want to indulge in something more substantial, our standard menu will be available. “
“Our passion and commitment to excellence and innovation keeps us on our toes. We are constantly reviewing our menu, our wine-list and our suppliers to keep up with the times, current trends and our customers’ tastes, to make sure we deliver a relevant and memorable dining experience for our loyal local patrons as well as international guests.”
“Retaining old favourites and our signature dishes will always be a focus. New and interesting additions will keep people curious and provide new memories for our customers. Our meat experience is expanding to include top-quality and pristinely marbled Wagyu beef products as well as a wider selection of cuts of steak to offer a broader range of affordability options. Locally and sustainably sourced fresh Cape fish, from the sea to your plate in record time, is also a priority. We are sourcing the latest award-winning wines as well as a bigger selection of well-priced house wines to accommodate all palates and pockets. Our new wine tasting experience, tantalizing cocktail menu and our summer terrace lunches will all no doubt be popular,” concludes Ian Halfon.
The Meat Experience at Belthazar
Belthazar’s in-house Master Butcher sources only the very best AAA grade grain-fed and grass-fed beef, including superior free-range, grass-fed organic beef and Wagyu beef. Matured for a minimum of 28 days, all the meat is hung on the carcass (dry-aged) for three days in specially designed temperature-controlled cold rooms with humidity. Thereafter, the Fillet, Sirloin, Rump and Rib-Eye are ‘wet-aged’, while the T-Bone, Chicago Cut (Belthazar’s signature Rib-Eye on the bone), Fillet on the Bone and Sirloin on the Bone are left to ‘dry-age’ for up to 40 days. Belthazar also offers top quality Karoo Lamb, Beef, Lamb and Pork Ribs and their extensive Game Menu includes Ostrich, Crocodile, Springbok, Kudu, Impala, Wildebeest, Blesbok, Gemsbok and Eland.
Belthazar specialises in Mozambican shellfish, one of the few restaurants in Cape Town offering this superior shellfish 365-days-a-year, as well as Norwegian salmon and the freshest local seafood delivered daily. For a real extravaganza, what could get better than the Mozambican Royal Seafood Platter for Two, including a whole crayfish, four medium langoustines, 4 medium tiger prawns, 6 queen prawns and fresh mussels – perfectly prepared and served with lemon butter, garlic butter and per-peri sauce.
The wine experience at Belthazar is second to none with wine, wine everywhere, tempting wine-lovers with the largest wine-by-the-glass bar in the world – an iconic wine bar with the biggest nitrogen-infused tap unit in the world serving 200 premium wines by the glass. Patrons are expertly advised by trained sommeliers on an award-winning wine-list of up to 400 wines, and the wines are professionally stored in a designer vinotèque and served in Riedel glassware to enhance the wine of your choice. With a superb wine selection by single varietal, blend and style, the state-of-the-art wine list at Belthazar highlights vintage ratings, critics’ ratings, wine awards and taste indicators.
In addition to an extraordinary wine list, Belthazar also specialises in whiskies/whiskeys, single malts, brandies, Cognac, Armagnac, Calvados, liqueurs, beers (traditional and craft) and ciders.
Belthazar, perfectly located in the heart of the V&A Waterfront, boasts a spectacular all-weather dining enclosure on the terrace equipped with a mist cooling system and heaters, and offers panoramic views of the Waterfront and Table Mountain.
