I’m a sucker for food and wine pairings so when I heard that Spier has a SOUP and wine pairing, I dove right in! I started the day at Vadas Smokehouse and Bakery for a bubbly breakfast with the bestie.
Breakfast at Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery
Although it is winter here in South Africa, it was a lovely day and we decided to sit outside in the morning sun and fresh air. We of course ordered a bottle of bubbly to go with our breakfast choices of a classic eggs benedict and a really cool sourdough salmon and cream cheese waffle.
The bubbly was in fact a Spier Cap Classique rose 2019 and it paired so perfectly well with our breakfast. Especially the salmon!
After breakfast, we went on a short walk to the wine tasting room.
On the way we discovered the segway tours which is R375 per person (1 hour session) but if you do the 5pm session you get a free bottle of wine. Unfortunately, because we had bubbly for breakfast we were not allowed on the segway as they have a strict no drinking and driving policy 🙂 Next time!
Interactive Sound Sculpture
We also stumbled upon the “interactive sound sculpture” garden. This was super cool especially because you could interact with the art without touching it and that’s great in times of COVID.
Soup and Wine Pairing
The tasting room has pretty views of the lake and gardens with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating areas.
We decided to sit inside this time and were served our Soup and Wine Pairing. The soup and wine pairing consisted of the following:
- Sauvignon Blanc 2020 + Light watercress soup with dill & goats cheese
- Chenin Blanc 2017 + Creamy Jerusalem artichoke soup with truffle cream
- Signature Pinotage 2020 + Beetroot Soup with Balsamic Pepper & Pomegranate Jewels
- Yelowwood Organic Red 2019 + Roast tomato soup served with a cheese finger
- Cape Vintage 2017 + Drunken prune cheesecake with brownie crumble
I believe this soup and wine pairing is super great value at only R120 per person. The pairing is open 7 days a week available from 1 June to 31 August 2021. Booking in advance is strongly advised.
The range of wines selected went particularly well with the soup. Our favourite was the beetroot soup paired with Pinotage. I was of course also a big fan of the chocolate brownie cheesecake with cape vintage. Yum!
Overall we had a great time and ended up buying a few bottles to take home.
