Getting to the Winelands is not always easy and when you’re pushed for time and still want to experience the magic of South Africa’s local wines – there’s a select few restaurants in town that offer a good wine menu.
Today I tried the popular Belthazar restaurant & Wine Bar – Grill and Seafood at the iconic V & A Waterfront. Which is also known to be the wine bar that has the biggest wine selection by the glass in the WORLD! They achieve this through their special wine decanters which keeps the wine fresh after opening.
No winefarm can quite beat the incredible views and close proximity to Table Mountain than that of the V & A Waterfront. And although I’m a big lover of vineyard views, the second best wonder to gaze at in my opinion is Table Mountain.
Belthazar is primely situated with both an indoor and outdoor dining area.
The wine list
The wine list or should I say wine BOOK is quite extensive offering a wide range of premium South African wines – over 250 by the glass and 650 by the bottle – from sparkling, red, white and fortified wines.
You can taste brands such as IONA, Raath, Tokara, Haskell, Nederburg, Cape Point Vineyards and more!
What could be better than enjoying supremely fresh seafood right on the harbours edge!
And if you’re not so much of a seafood person like me, then tuck in to some prime cut steaks.
I opted for ostrich and sweet potato fries 😍
The price range
This restaurant does lean towards the more expensive side as far as restaurants go for locals. But if you’re a foreigner with a strong currency, then you can dine like a king or queen and still feel like you’re getting a bargain.
A comfortable bill for 2 people would come to Around R1800.
Starters price range: Around R200 a dish.
Mains price range: Around R350 a dish.
Dessert price range: Around R90.
Wine per bottle price range: Between R1200 and R16000 for a bottle of champagne. And R180-R3600 for wine. On average you’re looking at R600 a bottle.
Wine per glass price range: R45-R300 a glass, served in Riedel glassware of course!
If you plan on visiting more than once, the loyalty card will give you 30% discount on your bill plus a R200 voucher on your birthday.
I’m extremely picky when it comes to service and Balthazar was top notch! I mean, our waiter even doubled up as a photographer! There’s also an in house sommelier to help you choose the right wine for your dish. Plus the manager on duty is always super friendly!
I had a super time and would love to visit again in the summer 😍
