Private tastings at The Dark Side

Posted on Oct 6, 2017Oct 6, 2017 by TheWineGirlCapeTown

#FirstThursday just got better. Last night I visited Now Showing which boasts fashion and lifestyle innovation and private wine tastings in an ever-changing space. This week I enjoyed wine from vines more than 50 years years old from Lammershoek Winery.

Lammershoek wines is based in the Swartland and they have quite an interesting story to tell..

The name Lammershoek dates back more than three centuries, linked to survival or the preservation of life in a harsh, untamed environment. Meaning “lambs’ corner”, legend has it that ewes sought shelter for their small lambs in the forest alongside the farm when they felt threatened by the black eagle which abounded here – locally known as the Lammervanger, meaning “lamb catcher” in the Afrikaans language.

And you can see the lamb on the labels.  Schalk Opperman, general manager and winemaker from Lammershoek is facilitating weekly private wine tastings at Now Showing every Thursday (Only 20 spaces available per night).

The space is on 109 Waterkant street and is split into two sections…

The minimalist ground floor provides a blank canvas of mirrors, concrete, and whitewashed walls to allow premier collections of garments and accessories by esteemed local design icons Colleen Eitzen, Amanda Laird-Cherry, Leigh Schubert and ALC to pop, while linen curtains conceal well-appointed dressing rooms.

Not to mention all the incredible mirrors! It’s mind-bending.

And the upstairs is where it is all happening!

The theme for the art gallery / shop upstairs is “The Dark Side” which will only be around until the end of October. Think all things bold, eerie, and enigmatic which have been assembled in an atmospheric space where you can take every element home from charcoal water, inky black pasta, and decadent dark chocolate, to luxurious lotions and beauty potions displayed on a washbasin.  A glass cabinet, home to a taxidermy owl, also houses opulent jewellery pieces and seductive adult items.
