Nederberg Charity Auction hands over cheque

Posted on Mar 20, 2017 by TheWineGirlCapeTown

The annual Nederburg Charity Auction cheque handover took place on Friday, 10 March at Nederburg Wine Estate, where two deserving Boland based organisations were the recipients of funds raised at last year’s annual charity auction.

The charity auctions forms part of the annual Nederburg Auction, and is an opportunity for the industry to support and invest in the future of new wines and wine makers. 2016 charity auctioneer Roland Peens says that 15 rare wines were knocked down at last year’s charity sale, raising over R 527 000.00 for various outreach programmes run by the organisations, which aim to invest in the future of the local young people.

Hope Through Action, a non-profit organisation established to bring about life-changing initiatives for young children in Paarl and Franschoek, as well as The Breytenbach Centre, a multidisciplinary cultural centre in Wellington, were each presented with proceeds of over R263 000 by the Nederburg charity auction. The proceeds raised for the two local organisations were generated from ticket sales for the pre-auction tasting held in 2016 as well as the annual charity auction event. The funding that the two organisations have received will be used to support their development programmes.   “Along with the bids, attendees contributed generously in the form of donations, and we were pleased with the amount raised,” says Peens.

Presenting the cheques on behalf of Nederburg were Inger Truter, Auction Office Coordinator, 2016 charity auctioneer, Roland Peens and Gerhard Claassens, the CSI Controller at Nederburg. The Nederburg Charity Auction has been invested in local charity organisations in the areas of health, youth development and education since 1993.

Determined to create better opportunities for the youth, The Breytenbach Centre continues to focus on its literacy programme for learners in order to help them grow and offer assisted learning.  Cloete Breytenbach, Board of Trustees and one of the Founding Members of The Breytenbach Centre says, “The funding received from The Nederburg Charity Auction will be put towards the literacy programme that we have at the centre, which allows us to reach out to many learners, scheduling educational sessions with them on a weekly basis.”

Hope Through Action continue to focus on developing life and personal skills for the youth and assists in creating an opportunity for these young people to meet and interact with peers and gain knowledge in a safe environment. Nkosana Mguni, a representative from Hope Through Action says that the organisation focuses on social issues that impact on lives. “Through our efforts we hope to provide children and youths with valuable skills that they need to succeed in life and contribute to their communities”

Gerhard Claassens, CSI Controller at Nederburg, says that he hopes to see this initiative grow from strength to strength in the future. “For the 2017 Nederburg Charity Auction we hope to raise more funds so that we can continue to make contributions to the local community. The Nederburg Auction is enthusiastic to host the 2017 charity auction on 16 September and we are positive that supporters will contribute generously. The 2017 charity auction items for 2017 promises to be an interesting selection and will be announced in due course,” concludes Claassens.

Ticket sales to the Tutored Pre-Auction Tastings on 01 August (CPT) and 03 August (JHB) will be available from June/July 2017. Book well in advance in order to avoid disappointment.

Ends.

Instagram post 18044292169211063 On a spur of the moment spree, I ventured into the Breedekloof Wine Valley, about an hour’s drive out of Cape Town, on a late Sunday morning when I discovered that Kirabo Private Cellar was one of the only cellars open. Thanks to Google! Winery 117 of 800! .
.
.

Kirabo Private Cellar is a family-run grape farm going back 6 generations! It was only in 2009 that the family decided to make their own wine and today even make their own beer called Broer Beer. There are 5 wines available for wine tasting at R5 a glass with some pretty good servings. They only produce red wine such as Merlot, Shiraz, Petit Verdot, a Barrel’s End blend and Cupcake (off-dry) all barrel matured and handcrafted. @kirabo_cellar @breedekloof_wine_valley #kirabocellar #kiraboprivatecellar #breedekloof #breedekloofvalley #breedekloofwinevalley #breedekloofwines #sawine #wosa #southafricanwines #satourism #tourcapetown #wine #winefarm #winefarmcapetown #winefarmsouthafrica #capewinelands #explorebreedekloof #explorecapetown #winegirl #winery #winerysouthafrica #southafricanwinery

Instagram post 17872849252497845 Happy world Carménère day! This is a one of a kind for South Africa, only 700 bottles of this baby were produced and for only R120 a bottle, it’s a real steal! .
.
Lozärn Wines comes from the Robertson region and are the champions of the carménère grape variety on home soil. In 2012, winemaker Salóme Buys-Vermeulen was enjoying a fine Chilean carménère with husband, Sybrand and a friend. She says it “was love at first sip”. This moment led to her planting a carménère vineyard in 2014. From this block Lozärn Wines produced the first single-varietal carménère in South Africa. The Carménère Rosé 2019 has just been released to market. .
.
Enjoy notes of candyfloss, strawberries and Pink Lady apples. “It’s a wine for the setting of the summer sun; pair with prosciutto, Brie and tapas, and good company,” says Salóme. Carménère Rosé 2019 (R120.00) are available through www.lozarn.co.za as well as specific outlets.
