If you think you have tried all the wine farms in South Africa, think again! It’s a hard task, and there are new ones popping up all the time. Here is a list of 5 of my top, new and modern wine farms you should explore before summer is out.
This wine farm opened in December 2017 and can be found just off the main road of Franschhoek close to La Motte, about a 50 minute drive out of Cape Town. The unique architecture of the tasting room is what gives it modern appeal – plus it overlooks a small lake and towering mountains.
This small, family operated winery is owned by Martin Smith (winemaker) and Ndabe Mareda (business partner) and is positioned as a high-end, boutique wine brand.
There are three cultivars available for tasting:
- Paserene Chardonnay (W.O Elgin),
- Paserene Marathon, a Bordeaux-style red
- Paserene Union, a Rhône-inspired red blend.
It is sure to be a great stop to start your wine tasting day!
The new Paserene tasting room is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00

Haskell was recently renovated in December 2017 and is a wonderful location for wine tasting and lunch overlooking some beautiful Stellenbosch mountains. It’s close to the Route 44 market, just down the road from Rust en Vrede, about a 45 minute drive from Cape Town.
If you are a fan of Syrah, then you have hit the jackpot because you can taste 3 different Syrah styles side by side. Taste 5 wines for R50 pp which is wavered upon purchase of wine. Choose from two options. A Flagship range or Lifestyle range and don’t forget to try their famous apple pie!

If it’s pizza and wine you like, then this one is for you! For just R60, you can taste 4 pairings.
Situated just off the Bottelary road, close to Stellenbosch, Bellevue is the perfect setting for sophisticated friends and families. They too have recently given their wine tasting centre and restaurant and overhaul in November 2017. They are experts in Pinotage and you would be totally spoiled to get your hands on a limited edition 1953 bottle. Be sure to look out for the Brandy pot distillery too.
The restaurant is open from Tuesdays to Sundays from 09:00 to 17:00, Fridays from 09:00 to 19:00. For more information on Bellevue’s many offerings, contact the estate on 021 865 2054 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Ok, so this isn’t a new farm, but they do have a new pairing. If it’s sweet treats you like, then you should definitely try the Grande Provence Angel’s Tears Nougat and wine pairing. You can enjoy your tasting in their garden, surrounded by tasteful art, shaded by large trees and surrounded by the trickling sound of fountains as ambiance music.
For just R70 pp, you will get all of this:
- Lemon & thyme nougat with Angels Tears Sauvignon Blanc.
- Mango & macadamia nougat with Angels Tears Muscato Chenin Blanc – my favourite pairing!
- Cherry & raspberry nougat with Angels Tears Natural Sweet Rosé.
- Cranberry & chocolate nougat with Angels Tears Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon.
Overall, it’s rather a nutty and sweet pairing so if you have a sweet tooth and are not allergic to nuts, then you will absolutely enjoy this. I thought the wines went quite well with the nougat. If sweet treats or nuts aren’t your thing, try one of the Reserve or Heritage tastings – bonus is that they have live, fresh oysters on site too!

Enjoy a modern take on wine tasting whilst overlooking rolling hills of vineyards in the Stellenbosch region, not too far away from the town centre. The wine tasting room has an extremely modern, minimalistic and clean feel for the ultimate sophisticated wine tasting experience. This farm is French owned and has a state of the art EVERYTHING – including a glass museum, bistro and wine cellar.
It’s R50 to taste 5 wines and would be the perfect start to your day before heading to the bistro for lunch.
